Longtime Stay

Some travellers like Ecuador so much that they want to stay longer. Finding work or volunteering opportunities should not be too difficult in Guayaquil. Some volunteers work in orphanages, work with street children or do environmental work. Paid work can be found as for example an English teacher. There is a big demand, since Ecuadorians regard speaking English as extremely important for their future. Many Ecuadorians hope to migrate to an English speaking country.

Most language schools prefer teachers with a TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) qualification, although it is also possible to find work without one. A work visa is preferable, but should be applied for at your local embassy. Some schools will help you obtain one. However, it also possible to find temporary work with a tourist visa. The wages are on average 4 to 5 dollars, which is low for western standards, but is a high salary in Ecuador. Because Ecuador is relatively cheap, you can live on this comfortably.

Accommodation is cheap and easy to find. Many internet cafes have a notice board where rooms or apartments are advertised or otherwise try the Sunday edition of El Universo or El Telégrafo. A big room should be well under 100 dollars.
